WD Security is Intel-only and has not shipped a native Apple Silicon build. Western Digital's own support documentation explicitly directs macOS users with Apple silicon Macs to install Rosetta 2 in order to run WD Security. This approach works today but will fail when Apple removes Rosetta 2 in macOS 28 (September 2028). You should contact Western Digital support now to ask whether they plan to release a native Apple Silicon build of WD Security before that deadline. In the meantime, if you have an external WD drive that requires encryption or security features, consider whether your Mac's built-in FileVault full-disk encryption might meet your needs for sensitive data; many users find it sufficient and it runs natively without relying on Rosetta. If WD-specific hardware encryption is essential to your workflow, reach out to Western Digital to express demand for a native build — vendor interest signals from customers often prioritize engineering work.
