About This App

VLC is the long-running, free and open-source media player from VideoLAN. It plays virtually every audio and video format you can throw at it without needing extra codecs, including DVDs, Blu-rays, network streams, and obscure container formats that other players reject. It is widely used by home users for playback, by professionals for verifying media files, and as a lightweight transcoder. A native Apple Silicon build has been confirmed running on Macs in the Rosetta Check community.

VideoLAN ships native Apple Silicon builds of VLC alongside Intel-only and Universal Binary variants, all freely available from the official download page. The native arm64 build has been available since version 3.0.12.1 and remains actively maintained. To upgrade from your current Intel build: visit get.videolan.org/vlc and download the file labelled vlc-[version]-arm64.dmg (not the intel64 version, which is the default download shown to Intel Mac users). Install it as you normally would — your existing playlists, preferences and library settings carry over without any manual migration. After installing, you will see noticeably lower CPU usage and longer battery life during playback. If you have VLC installed via the Mac App Store instead of a direct download, check the App Store app itself for an update, which will pull the latest available version through that channel.
