Riffstation
Riffstation was a popular music learning application developed by Sonic Ladder that automatically detected and displayed chord progressions in audio files and songs. Musicians, music students, and hobbyists used it to learn songs by loading MP3s or CD tracks and seeing chord diagrams synchronized with the music playback. The app also allowed users to slow down audio, change pitch, isolate or mute guitar parts, loop specific sections, and sync with a metronome. It was particularly valuable for guitar players and other musicians who wanted to quickly learn the chord progressions of their favorite songs without manually figuring them out by ear.
Suggested Replacements
1 suggestionUnfortunately, Riffstation appears to have been discontinued and is no longer available for download or update. The original developer Sonic Ladder no longer maintains the app, and no Apple Silicon native version exists. For a replacement, I recommend Capo, which is actively maintained and available as a Universal Binary on the Mac App Store. Capo provides similar automatic chord detection functionality, allows you to slow down music without changing pitch, and offers advanced features like spectral analysis and chord editing. While it may have a slightly different interface than Riffstation, it serves the same core purpose of helping musicians learn songs through automated chord recognition and audio manipulation tools.
