About This App

Papers is a reference management and academic research organisation application designed for researchers, students, and academics. It helps users collect, organise, annotate and cite scientific papers, journal articles, and other research materials from across the web and their local library. Papers integrates with word processors for citation insertion, provides search and tagging features for managing large collections, and offers synchronisation across devices. The app is commonly used in academic workflows where managing hundreds of papers and generating bibliographies is essential.

Papers has been discontinued and is no longer maintained by the developer. The last version shipped does include a universal binary that runs natively on Apple Silicon, so if you are already running the final release of Papers on an M-series Mac, it will continue to work under Rosetta 2. However, with no active development and Apple removing Rosetta 2 in macOS 28 (September 2028), Papers will eventually become incompatible with future macOS releases. Researchers and students still using Papers should begin planning a transition to an actively maintained reference manager. Popular native alternatives include Zotero (free and open-source, with excellent citation and collaboration features), Mendeley Reference Manager (from Elsevier, with a modern native interface), ReadCube Papers (a successor reference manager from the same vendor who made the original Papers), or Citavi (particularly strong for German-speaking users and those in social sciences). Each has different strengths around citation styles, integrations with word processors, and online synchronisation, so review a few to match your workflow before making the switch.
