MetaTrader 4

MetaTrader 4 is not a native macOS application and MetaQuotes has never released a native Apple Silicon build. The official macOS installer uses Wine, a Windows compatibility layer, which on Apple Silicon Macs runs through Rosetta 2 — creating two layers of emulation between your charts and the processor. This means the app works today, but performance is noticeably lower than a native alternative would be, with real costs: higher CPU and battery drain, occasional failures with custom Expert Advisors and indicators that rely on DLL files, and dropped frames during fast market data streams. More critically, Apple is removing Rosetta 2 entirely in macOS 28 (September 2028), and when that happens, MetaTrader 4 will stop launching on your Mac. MetaQuotes has shown no signs of building a true native port. If you trade actively or rely on custom automation, the most reliable path forward is to switch to MetaTrader 5, which MetaQuotes actively maintains and which many brokers now prefer — it offers the same charting and EA framework but with more modern architecture. If you are committed to MT4 specifically, begin planning now to migrate your data, strategies and accounts to another platform before the September 2028 deadline, or consider running MT4 on a Windows VPS rented from a datacenter near your broker — this eliminates the emulation problem but adds latency and cost.
